Stator End Slot Wedges, Oblique Wedges, and Insulating Pads
In a generator set, stator end slot wedges, oblique wedges, and insulating pads are indispensable components of the stator structure. Although they possess different shapes, they all play vital, interconnected roles in ensuring the stable operation and electrical safety of the generator windings.
1. Slot Wedges (Stator End)
Functions:
- Coil Fixation: The primary function is to securely fix the stator coils within the stator slots, preventing them from loosening due to operational vibration and electromagnetic forces.
- Insulation Protection: Typically made of insulating materials (e.g., epoxy cloth laminate), they provide electrical insulation, preventing short circuits between the coils and the stator core.
- Reducing Wear and Vibration: By immobilizing the coils, slot wedges reduce friction against the core, extending coil service life and reducing noise and vibration caused by electromagnetic forces.
Application Locations:
- Inside the Stator Slots: Installed above or on the sides of the coils to tightly fix the windings.
- End Position: Used at the coil ends to ensure coil stability and prevent loosening at the joints.
2. Oblique Wedges
Functions:
- Tightening Stator Coils: Oblique wedges work in conjunction with slot wedges to increase the pre-tightening force, ensuring the coils remain stationary within the slot, often leveraging an inclined surface design.
- Compensating for Thermal Expansion: Their design can compensate for the thermal expansion and contraction of the coils and core during operation, ensuring a stable contact pressure.
- Improving Cooling Efficiency: Some designs incorporate wedge-shaped cutouts within the cooling groove, using the oblique wedge to enhance airflow or cooling efficiency.
Application Locations:
- Inside the Stator Slots: Installed below or on the side of the slot wedge, completing the mechanical fixation structure.
- Cooling Grooves: Used in specific cooling channel designs to optimize heat dissipation.
3. Insulating Pads
Functions:
- Electrical Insulation: Their primary function is to provide essential electrical insulation, preventing electrical short circuits between the stator coils and the conductive stator core.
- Buffering Effect: Insulating pads provide a buffering effect, reducing the impact of mechanical vibration on both the coils and the core.
- Coil Protection: They protect the coils from mechanical damage and abrasive contact, contributing to extended service life.
Application Locations:
- Between Coils and Core: Typically installed directly between the stator coils and the stator core.
- Between Wedges: In some layered designs, pads are installed between the slot wedge and the oblique wedge to ensure combined electrical insulation and stable mechanical support.
4. Correlation between Shape and Function
- Slot Wedge Shape: The classic wedge-shaped design facilitates tight wedging. Newer designs may feature a layered structure (oblique wedge on top, elastic corrugated plate at the bottom) allowing for continuous, adjustable pressing force. They are made from insulating materials like epoxy cloth laminate.
- Oblique Wedge Shape: Features an inclined surface to perfectly fit the slot wedge, enhancing fixation and compensating for thermal changes. These are typically made of metal or high-strength composite materials.
- Insulating Pad Shape: Designed to match the contour of the stator slot and coils, providing uniform electrical insulation and mechanical support. They often incorporate elasticity for a beneficial buffering effect against vibration.
